1. Introduction
This Risk Assessment Policy outlines the measures and protocols to be followed by our gymnastics club to minimise the risk of personal injuries during training and activities. Our club is committed to creating a safe and secure environment for all participants, and this policy serves as a guide for identifying and mitigating potential hazards.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all coaches, gymnasts, and individuals involved in club activities, including training sessions, events and other club related activities.

3. Risk Assessment Procedures
The following risk assessment procedures will be conducted regularly to ensure a safe training environment. Below are several examples of how 2PRU Gymnastics Club conducts its risk assessments. This is not an exhaustive list but includes:

3.1 Daily Assessments
· Coaches will perform visual inspections of the training area and equipment before each session and activity.
· Immediate action will be taken to address any identified hazards, and equipment will be removed from use if deemed unsafe.

3.2 Weekly Assessments
· A designated club safety officer will conduct a more thorough inspection of equipment, facilities, and training areas on a weekly basis.
· The safety officer will document findings and ensure necessary maintenance and repairs are carried out promptly.

3.3 Monthly Assessments
· A comprehensive assessment will be conducted by a team of coaches and safety officers, covering all aspects of the training environment, including equipment, flooring, and facility layout.
· Any recurring issues will be addressed, and potential risks will be reviewed for mitigation.

3.4 Yearly Assessments
· A comprehensive review of the entire facility and training procedures will be conducted annually.
· Recommendations for improvements will be documented, and necessary updates to policies and procedures will be made.

4. Equipment/Facility/Set Up

4.1 Equipment Checks
· Coaches will perform regular checks on all equipment for signs of wear and tear.
· Any damaged or worn-out equipment will be removed from use until repaired or replaced.
4.2 Equipment Positioning and Safety
· Equipment will be placed strategically to prevent collisions with surrounding objects and individuals.
· Clear pathways will be maintained to ensure unobstructed movement and accessibility.
4.3 Trip/Slip/Fall Hazards
· Wires and cables will be secured and organised to prevent tripping hazards.
· Any uneven surfaces or sliding mats will be properly marked and addressed promptly.
4.4 Fire Safety
· Equipment will not block doors or windows, ensuring clear evacuation routes in case of fire or other emergencies.
5. Communication/People Management
5.1 Skills Attempted
· Coaches will assess gymnasts' readiness for attempting new skills, ensuring they are appropriately trained and conditioned.
· Gymnasts will not be pushed to attempt skills beyond their capabilities.
5.2 Clear Communication
· Coaches will provide clear and concise instructions, and gymnasts are expected to actively listen and follow instructions.
· Coaches will ensure that gymnasts understand safety protocols and adhere to them.
5.3 Safe Equipment Manoeuvres
· Proper techniques for moving and adjusting equipment will be taught and followed by both coaches and gymnasts.
5.4 Safety Guidance and Points
· Coaches will provide thorough safety guidance during training sessions.
· Ignorance of safety guidance by gymnasts will be addressed through education and reinforcement.
5.5 Encouragement and Reassurance
· Gymnasts will be encouraged to attempt skills within their capabilities, and coaches will provide reassurance to build confidence.
6. Reporting and Incident Management
· All incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions will be reported to the designated safety officer.
· The safety officer will investigate incidents, take corrective actions, and maintain a record of all incidents and actions taken.
7. Training and Education
· Coaches will undergo regular training in safety procedures, risk assessment, and injury prevention techniques.
· Gymnasts will receive safety training and be educated about the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
8. Review and Continuous Improvement
· This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its effectiveness and relevance.
· Feedback from coaches, gymnasts, and other stakeholders will be used to improve safety measures and procedures.
